Woman dies in Prince William apartment shooting; suspect arrested

A woman was fatally shot in an apartment Monday morning in the Bull Run area of Prince William County. After looking for a man who ran from the scene, police said Thursday they made an arrest when the suspect turned himself in.

Searches Monday with a police dog and a Fairfax County police helicopter were unsuccessful, but authorities said that there was no ongoing public threat and that the incident did not appear to be random.

Prince William police said they found Mary Anne Smoot, 37, dead with apparent gunshot wounds after arriving at 10:22 a.m. in the 8100 block of Cobden Court in the Ravens Crest apartment complex.

Police said witnesses reported that before officers arrived, a man in black pants and a black jacket with a fur-lined hood ran from the area of the apartment complex, near a Costco store off Route 234 south of Interstate 66.

Police identified the suspect Monday as Maquan Omari McCray, 18, of Bristow and said the shooting was related to a dispute. McCray was arrested Thursday after he turned himself in, police said.
